Ozgur is a professor at the University of Greenwich, School of Law and Criminology. He completed his PhD at the School of Law, University of Essex. Previously, he was a post-doc fellow at the University of Oxford between 2012-2016. Moreover, he is a lawyer and works as a legal expert for the Council of Europe. His main research interests are criminal law, business, human rights and the environment, immigration, criminal law, the right to conscientious objection, freedom of thought, conscience and religion and freedom of expression. His books are as follows: Introduction to the English Legal System (Transnational Press London, 2021); Introduction to Public Law and Human Rights (Transnational Press London, 2021); Introduction to EU Law (Transnational Press London, 2021); Freedom of Religion and Belief in Turkey-Religion, Society and Politics (Palgrave 2021); The Right to Conscientious Objection to Military Service and Turkey`s Obligations Under International Human Rights Law (Palgrave Macmillan, Pivot, 2014); Conscientious Objection to Military Service in International Human Rights Law and Turkey (Istanbul Bilgi University Publishing, 2014 in Turkish); Conscientious Objection to Military Service in International Human Rights Law (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and The Effects of the European Court of Human Rights Decisions’ on the Turkish Legal System (Human Rights Association, 2005 in Turkish). He is also one of the editors of the following books: Freedom of Religion and Belief in Turkey (Eds., Cambridge Scholars, 2014); Conscientious Objection: Resisting Militarized Society (Eds., Zed Books, 2009) and Sand in the Wheels: Conscientious Objection – Philosophical Sources and Experiences (İletişim Publishing House, 2008 in Turkish).
Before Ozgur started his career in academia, he worked as a lawyer between 2000 and 2004 in a full-time basis. He dealt with prospective clients in business, criminal and human rights law cases. He assessed their situation and gave legal advice. If clients decided to take legal action, he litigated their cases on their behalf. He also represented them in court. Since 2004 he has been working as a lawyer in a part-time basis.
In addition, since 2008, he works as a legal expert for the Council of Europe, and train lawyers, prosecutors, judges, legal officers and legal experts on the European Convention on Human Rights.
He has been teaching at different Higher Education institutions in the UK since 2006 (e.g. University of Greenwich, BPP University, University of Oxford and University of Essex) on the subjects of EU Law, Public (Constitutional and Administrative Law), Human Rights Law, English Legal System and Legal Skills and Research Methodology.
He has also attended numerous conferences to present his research findings to other scholars. Furthermore, he has organised several international conferences, symposiums and seminars in various institutions (University of Greenwich, BPP University, University of Oxford, LSE, University of Essex and Istanbul Bilgi University) in collaboration with other international organisations (i.e. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch).
He has gained his management (including administration, operational and commercial) experience in different positions such as deputy head, programme leader, academic manager and dean. In order to improve his management skills, he completed the Management Development Programme at BPP University. It was awarded by the ILM Level 3 Leadership and Management. These programmes assisted him to learn the art of good management, covering the topics of leadership, operations, budgeting, process, project, people and self-management..
