Dr Can Eken
PRACTICE OVERVIEW
Can is a tenured assistant professor at Durham Law School, Durham University. He is the co-director of the Durham International Dispute Resolution Institute (DIDRI) and a fellow of Advance HE (FHEA) in the United Kingdom. His research and teaching centre on international dispute resolution, with a particular focus on international commercial arbitration. His research interests also include online dispute resolution, investment arbitration, third-party funding, and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as negotiation and mediation.
Can is a triple-qualified lawyer, admitted as an attorney in California and Türkiye, and as a solicitor in England and Wales. He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and an accredited civil and commercial mediator. He is on the panel of arbitrators at the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dubai International Arbitration Centre, Asian International Arbitration Centre, and several other international arbitration centres. Listed by LexisNexis as an arbitration expert, he has served as a counsel and consultant in complex international commercial arbitration cases.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Can has practised law in Turkey and acted in major international arbitration cases as a consultant and Counsel. He co-authored Camber and Partners’ Turkiye chapter for international arbitration. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) London Branch, and he previously served CIARB’s East Asia Branch and Thames Valley Branch as a committee member, and on the pro tem Committee for the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Court of Arbitration, among other professional appointments.
Can has previously held visiting scholar positions at several leading universities, including Stanford University, the University of Sydney, and Singapore Management University. In addition to his full-time academic position at Durham University, he currently serves as a Central Asian Legal Research Fellow at Tashkent State University of Law in Uzbekistan and Izmir University of Economics in Türkiye.
Can has delivered lectures and training sessions to lawyers, notaries, judges, and students across numerous jurisdictions, including Azerbaijan, Australia, Brazil, England, Hong Kong, India, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Singapore, Taiwan, Türkiye, the United States, and Uzbekistan.
